Essential care for new owners

Welcoming a new puppy into your home is incredibly exciting! However, it also comes with specific responsibilities to ensure your new companion stays happy, healthy, and well-behaved. Don't worry, though—we are here to provide lifetime support for all our puppy families.

Here is how you can get ready for your new arrival:

  • Research the breed: Swedish Vallhunds are highly intelligent, deeply affectionate, and very active. They thrive on human companionship and mental stimulation, so they love having a job to do. Make sure their high energy levels and vibrant temperaments match your daily lifestyle.
  • Prepare your home: Pet-proof your space before puppy arrives. Secure loose wires, move toxic plants, and store household cleaners safely out of reach. Set up a dedicated, cozy area with food and water bowls. We highly encourage using a crate to give your puppy a secure bedroom of their own and to help keep them safe when unsupervised.
  • Plan introductions: If you have other pets, keep them separated initially. Wait to introduce them until your new puppy has settled in and you can supervise the meeting safely.
  • Expect a potty training curve: Swedish Vallhunds can be a bit tricky to house train. Because of their tiny bladders, it takes about 10 months to a year for them to physically mature. They aren't being stubborn or willful—they just physically can't hold it yet! Consistency and plenty of patience will be your best friends during this first year.
